If your organic sessions have been sliding even though your rankings look fine, you’re not imagining it. This is the new reality of zero click marketing: Google AI Overviews, Business Profiles, Maps and forums now answer searches before anyone clicks through to a website. Your traffic isn’t disappearing. It’s landing somewhere your analytics can’t see.
In the debut episode of Search Engine Journal’s relaunched podcast, editor-in-chief Katie Morton and senior news writer Matt G. Southern dug into this pattern, which is showing up across almost every industry. (Source: Search Engine Journal) We’ll go through what this means for founders, and what you can do about it.
In a Nutshell
- Zero click marketing matters because Google AI Overviews and other Google features now answer many searches without a click.
- Roughly two thirds of US Google searches in early 2026 were zero click searches, ending without a single click.
- Generic explainer content has taken the biggest hit. Transactional, local and branded searches still send clicks.
- Rankings and sessions no longer tell the whole story. Branded search volume and brand mentions fill in the gap.
What Are Google AI Overviews and How Do They Affect Website Traffic?
Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that appear at the top of Google’s results and answer a question directly. Because the answer sits on the results page, many people never click a link, so websites can lose visits even when their rankings haven’t moved.
The attention hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s collecting inside AI Overviews, Business Profiles, Maps, and newer features like Ask Maps, all of which answer the query without the user leaving Google. How Many Google Searches End Without a Click in 2026? (Zero Click Searches)
Citing Rand Fishkin’s analysis of Similarweb clickstream data, the podcast pair pointed out that roughly two thirds of US Google searches in the first four months of 2026 ended without a single click. Only about a quarter of searches sent someone to an external website at all.
These are called zero click searches. The rest either closed out on the results page, triggered another search, or routed the person to a Google-owned property.
What Is Zero Click Marketing and How Should a Small Business Respond?
Zero click marketing means getting your brand in front of people where they already are, even when they never visit your website. Instead of treating every visit as the goal, you make sure your business shows up, is named and trusted inside the answer itself.
For a small business, zero click SEO comes down to these three moves:
- Publish content only your business could write, based on your own experience and results.
- Keep your Google Business Profile and local details accurate, since local and transactional searches still send clicks.
- Show up where attention is going now, including AI answers, forums, social and video.
Why Is My Website Traffic Dropping Even Though My Google Rankings Look Fine?
The most common reason right now is that searchers are getting their answer on Google instead of clicking through. Your page can hold its position while fewer people visit it, especially if it answers a question an AI summary can handle on its own. It’s part of a wider shift, which we covered in our report on a study showing 37% of consumers turning to AI before Google.
Southern noted that transactional, local and branded searches are still reliably sending clicks the way they always have. What’s taken the biggest hit is content an AI summary can fully answer: generic explainers, wire-style news, and utility content like weather or listings.
Forums have muscled in too. After the core update in May 2026, Reddit reportedly climbed into the top three positions across every niche one popular rank tracker follows, a shift Google’s long-standing content partnership with the platform likely accelerated. Morton added that a meaningful chunk of what leaves Google isn’t landing on websites at all. It’s going to social and video, formats AI can’t easily replicate, especially with younger audiences.
The Content That Stopped Earning Its Keep
For years, publishing broadly on every adjacent topic was a defensible strategy because Google indexed and rewarded the volume. That calculation has changed. Generic, could-have-come-from-anywhere content now competes directly with AI summaries that answer the question before a reader clicks.
Google’s Danny Sullivan drew a useful dividing line at a recent Search Central event: generic content that anyone could have written sits on one side, and the work only your business or your firsthand experience could have produced sits on the other. The topic itself matters less than which side of that line a piece falls on. If your content calendar still leans heavily on roundups and definitional posts, it’s worth thinking your entire SEO strategy over.
Some Questions and Answers on How to Optimize for Zero Click Marketing
1. How Do I Tell If Google AI Overviews Are Taking Traffic From My Website?
You can’t see it in a single number, but there are clear signs to look for in Google Search Console:
- Compare impressions and clicks over the last few months. Impressions holding steady while clicks fall is the classic pattern.
- Split your queries into branded and non-branded. Branded searches usually hold up. General questions are where the drop shows.
- Check which pages lost clicks. If they’re explainers and definitions, AI answers are the likely cause.
- Review the new controls. Google has started rolling out AI Search Console controls beyond the UK, which give founders more visibility into how AI features surface their content.
2. How Do I Measure SEO Success When People Don’t Click Through to My Site?
You track zero click marketing by widening your SEO results and scoreboard rather than replacing it. Raw session counts used to be a dependable proxy for visibility. Now your brand can show up throughout the search results and in an AI answer, and never register in your analytics, because nobody clicked.
Morton and Southern suggested tracking these signals alongside clicks:
- Branded search volume. Repeated exposure in AI answers tends to nudge people toward searching your brand name directly later, so growth here is a strong sign your content is working. You can follow it for free in Google Search Console and Google Trends.
- Unlinked brand mentions. A brand referenced in a Reddit thread or forum post can end up feeding a chatbot’s recommendation days later, with no link anywhere in that chain for a standard backlink report to catch. Google Alerts is a free way to spot new mentions, and Brand24 and Mention are paid tools that also watch forums and social platforms.
- Citations in AI answers. Whether your brand and pages are being named when people ask relevant questions. Ubersuggest’s AI Search Visibility report tracks this across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. You can also ask your key questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity yourself and note whether your brand appears.
The practical takeaway: don’t wait for the click to prove your content worked. If a piece helped shape the answer someone eventually acted on, it did its job, even if the dashboard never shows it.
3. How Do I Track Branded Search Volume in Google Search Console?
Branded search volume is how many people search for your business name. Here’s a simple way to follow it:
- Open Search Console and go to the Performance report for Search results.
- Use the branded queries filter to isolate searches that include your brand name. If it isn’t available on your account, add a query filter that contains your brand name.
- Set the date range to compare the last three months with the three months before.
- Watch the trend over time rather than a single month. A steady climb means more people are looking for you by name.
What Zero Click Marketing Means for Your Reporting
None of this means organic sessions stop mattering. It means they stop being the whole story. At Incubate Growth, this is the shift we’ve been building into client reporting over the past few months, pairing declining clicks with branded search growth, citation tracking, and mention volume so our clients get the full picture.
The tools to measure this harder-to-track kind of visibility exist. Most businesses just haven’t updated their reporting habits to use them yet.
